Annie McCarthy

Passion is contagious and best when shared.

A curious mind and supportive spirit led Annie from her mom’s kitchen counter to brewing up incredible brands at VMG.

Tiny sous chef

As a toddler I used to pull a stool up next to her in the kitchen and ask, “What are we making?” If there was something to be done, I wanted to help.

Colorado kid

I loved playing outside in the forest and mountains as a kid and I’m still happiest when I’m hiking, skiing or running. I’ve also always been inspired by the hippie food scene in Boulder — I even tried brewing my own kombucha.

Expect the unexpected

VMG is not what I expected from a private equity firm! I thought it would be all sharp elbows and excel spreadsheets. But I interned before joining full-time, and quickly realized what an incredible, supportive, collaborative, down-to-earth group of people these are.

It’s amazing to work with such passionate founders and help make their dreams come true.

Briefly, what kind of kid were you?

I drove my parents crazy with my energy and sort of nerdy questions. I always wanted to know what was going on and how I could get involved. My mom says as a toddler I used to pull a stool up next to her in the kitchen and ask, “What are we making?” If there was something to be done, I wanted to help.

Do you remember your very first paying job?

I was a barista at a little French bakery in my neighborhood. I had to sample every new pastry made by the chef so I could make recommendations to customers. Tough gig!

There’s a pattern emerging here.

Yup… if someone is creating something great, I am really drawn to helping them make it better and get it out into the world!

Is there anything about where you grew up that defines who you are today?

I grew up in Colorado (and I’ll tell you that within 5 minutes of meeting you).  I loved playing outside in the forest and mountains as a kid and I’m still happiest when I’m hiking, skiing  or running. I’ve also always been inspired by the hippie food scene in Boulder - I even tried brewing my own kombucha.

So now you’re brewing brands. That seems to excite you.

Absolutely! Brands are a huge part of our lives. I love being a part of brands that have a positive impact and make people want to make healthier choices.

What attracts you most about working with entrepreneurs?

I think passion is contagious and best when shared. It’s amazing to work with such passionate founders and help make their dreams come true.

What was it about the VMG culture that attracted you in the first place?

VMG is not what I expected from a private equity firm! I thought it would be all sharp elbows and excel spreadsheets. But I interned before joining full-time, and quickly realized what an incredible, supportive, collaborative, down-to-earth group of people these are. They’re all the kind of people you want on your team.

So at VMG it sounds like you’re doing what you do best – providing that key assist for the win.

Straight line from pulling up the stool in the kitchen!
