It all began when John Rexer, Ilegal's founder, started bringing mezcal down from various villages in Oaxaca to supply his bar in Antigua, Café No Sé. Rexer decided to make his own mezcal and Ilegal started to take shape. It required some light smuggling, but in the end it was all worth it.
