I don’t think I ever lost my childhood bossiness, but I’ve learned to shape demands into requests and mentor instead of telling others what to do.
YOU’RE KNOWN FOR RUNNING OUR VOLUNTEER DAYS. WHAT DRIVES YOU TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?
My family immigrated to the U.S. to give me a better life. Back then, times were not always easy. Until my brother and I were old enough, my parents really leaned on the community to help with things like translating forms, learning the public transportation system and connecting with others. I am where I am today due to their sacrifice, and I feel so lucky. Giving back to the community is a no-brainer for me — it doesn’t cost me much to try and help make someone else’s life better, and the benefits can become tenfold when others pass it on.
THAT’S REALLY INSPIRING. SO WHAT WERE YOU LIKE AS A KID?
I was really bossy! Some of my childhood memories include lining up my stuffed animals for school while I taught and always wanting to be the banker in Monopoly. I don’t think I ever lost that trait, but I’ve learned to shape demands into requests and mentor instead of telling others what to do.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO GROW UP IN YOUR FAMILY?
Active, crowded, loving and a lot of fun. Growing up, there were always 6–10 people living in our house. Cousins would be dropped off in the mornings so our grandparents could watch all the kids at the same time while our parents worked multiple jobs. Despite how many of us there were, we always had dinner together each night. We were, and still are, a very close-knit family, and I know I can count on them.
JUMPING AHEAD…WHAT ARE SOME EARLY WORK EXPERIENCES THAT YOU’LL NEVER FORGET?
My very first job during the summer before college was in customer service at Boudin at the Wharf. I didn’t have a car at the time, so I took two trains over two hours each way to get there. I remember the hustle and effort needed to be successful at that job, and I’ve continued to bring that mindset to all my roles since.
SPEAKING OF “ROLES SINCE,” WHAT GETS YOU MOST PSYCHED ABOUT WORKING WITH BRANDS AT VMG?
Since its founding, VMG has always strived to invest in better-for-you brands that target all areas of improvement for mankind, from low-sugar alternatives to better ingredients to cruelty-free testing to limiting impacts on the environment. I love that VMG supports entrepreneurs that are creating businesses to improve people’s lives.
AND THE COMMUTE?
Anything shorter than a four-hour round trip feels fast to me!
